What happened to the all those proposed gTLD's?

Hello:

A few years ago, there was a lot of discussion over the idea of creating new
global top-level domains, like .shop and .nom, to relieve the congestion in
the .com domain. But all the news stories about ICANN nowadays mention only
the imminent competition in the .com, .net and .org domains. Although I
suppose domain registry competition is important from an economic
standpoint, what end users like myself really care about is new gTLD's,
since we'll all have to read them, memorize them, type them, and tolerate
their presence on billboards and T-shirts.
What happened to all the proposed gTLD's?
