Chief gTLD Registry Liaison

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, (ICANN), gTLD Registry Liaison Department is responsible for issues concerning compliance with the requirements of agreements between ICANN and registry sponsors and operators, as well as building and maintaining relationships with those entities. Examples of registry operators include VeriSign, NeuLevel and Afilias who operate the .COM, .BIZ com, and .INFO registries respectively.

Due to an internal promotion, we have an opening to appoint a new head of the gTLD Registry Liaison. This position is based in our Marina Del Rey headquarters and reports to the SVP of Services.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop, implement and oversee the ICANN technical coordination role in regard to Registries.

  • Manage the review and analysis of proposals from registries and from the community concerning the gTLD registry service offerings. Provide advice to the registries on form and content of such proposals and direction in regards to process for handling such proposals.

  • Manage and monitor compliance requirements of agreements between ICANN and Registries, responding to complaints and concerns from the public as necessary.

  • Constantly seek improvement and innovation in the relationship between ICANN and the Registries.

  • Supervise staff responsible for Registry liaison support.

The preferred individual will possess extraordinary evaluative and deductive skills. They will be highly detail oriented and comfortable with dissecting, comparing and constructing multi-faceted information from a wide variety of sources. They must also have outstanding verbal and written communications skills and be fluent in English and at least one other language. The ability to manage multiple projects within tight deadlines is essential.

The successful individual will possess 5 to 7 years post graduate experience working in an international business environment, a broad understanding of technical issues involving the Internet, and an understanding of consensus based policy development processes. A post graduate degree in a technical area or international relations is preferred. International travel is a strong requirement of this position.

Compliance Program Manager

Key responsibilities include:

  • Establishment of technical and non-technical audit functions to review, on a regular basis, registry/registrar operations to ensure compliance with contracts and appropriate standards.

Compliance Program Technical Analyst

Deputy General Manager - Global Partnerships

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has an immediate opportunity for a Deputy General Manager Global Partnerships. Located in Los Angeles, this position reports to the General Manager of Global Partnerships and will join a new and growing network of skilled individuals.

You will work with other members of the Global Partnership team to gather, manage and assess information as part of prioritizing ICANN's global strategy. You will act on behalf of the organization with regional stakeholders, forums, initiatives and needs as they relate to ICANN's responsibilities. This includes the analysis of regional reports and the compilation of a global view on developments relevant to ICANN's business and strategic plan. Executive Assistant to ICANN Legal Counsel

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), located in Marina del Rey, Los Angeles, is looking for an Executive Assistant to work with its in-house legal department. The successful candidate will be energetic, enthusiastic, extremely well organized and detail oriented. The ability to take initiative and demonstrate sound judgment and discretion in dealing with communications to and from ICANN legal counsel is also required. Given the international nature of ICANN business, the preferred candidate will be culturally sensitive, flexible and occasionally willing to work outside of normal west coast business hours.

Duties of the job include assisting in the development and maintenance of a company-wide central filing system, including electronic databases and a document management system. Other primary responsibilities of the position include the organization of workflow, supporting legal counsels' activities, management of agendas, drafting of correspondence, and organizing travel and scheduled appointments.

General Manager, Public Participation

IANA Liaison: IETF

IANA Liaison: Regional Internet Registries

IANA Project Specialist

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is seeking to enhance its coverage in certain key areas of the IANA function. ICANN is the non-profit organization formed by the Internet community at the invitation of the U.S. Government to assume responsibility for significant Internet technical-management issues, such as coordination of the domain-name system, assignment of protocol parameters, and IP address space management. The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) is a function performed by ICANN under contract with the United States Government.

There are currently two positions available. Initially, both positions will be offered from the Marina del Rey office. At some time in the future, opportunities for IANA staff to relocate to offices outside of the United States may be available. These positions report directly to the General Manager of IANA.

Qualifications:

Due to the international nature of both ICANN and its stakeholders, applicants who read and speak other languages in addition to English will be given special consideration. A Bachelor’s or more advanced degree (or equivalent from a non-US university) is also highly preferable, as is experience working in multi-stakeholder environments.

The successful candidate will be very organized, capable of moving forward on multiple projects at the same time, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Attention to detail and flexibility are also key qualities.

General knowledge of, and experience with, personal computers and common office software such as spreadsheets, e-mail, and word processing programs are required.

Training in the highly specialized skills related to the IANA functions will be provided.

Job activities include:

  • Routine processing of requests from stakeholders in all parts of the world, in several of IANA’s area of responsibility. These include work with the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the Top Level Domain (TLD) managers, the Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), and the INT TLD Registry.
  • Working with the requestors in all of the above areas to clarify and validate complex requests in writing, by phone, and in person.
  • Working with other members of the IANA team to evaluate and improve IANA’s core functions on an ongoing basis.
  • Communicate with other staff members, ICANN stakeholders, and the community at large regarding areas of responsibility; including formal report preparation, staff briefings, and presentations.
  • Working with staff members and stakeholders in multiple time zones.
  • Occasional travel to meetings held by ICANN itself, and its stakeholders.
  • When necessary, directing the work of junior staff members to assist with completion of project requirements.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. While independent, the successful candidate will understand the significant constraints that may limit action; and how their position fits into the ICANN team as a whole.

Job duties will require use of a computer for prolonged periods of time.

Experience:

Familiarity with the Internet in general and registry operations in specific is desirable, although not required. Experience in a fast paced office environment is also beneficial. Knowledge of and experience in digital forms of authentication (e.g., PGP, X.509) would be an advantage as well.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone with two to three years of professional experience, or an experienced member of the technical community who is looking to move into an administrative role.

IDN Program Technical Officer

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the not-for-profit organization established to coordinate the technical elements of the domain name system (DNS) to ensure universal resolvability, so that all users of the Internet can find all valid addresses world-wide.

The reliable deployment of Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) is one of the key issues facing the global Internet community. An example of an IDN is the replacement of Latin character with other scripts in Internet domain names.

We have an immediate job opening for the position of IDN Program Technical Officer to support this work at ICANN. Reporting to the IDN Program Director, the primary responsibilities of the position are as follows:

  • Support ICANN's work in relation to Internationalized Domain Names, including providing technical and policy support.
  • Represent ICANN as needed in relation to the Internet technical community as the program relates to ICANN's responsibilities to coordinate and influence IDN developments.
  • Identify, analyze and report on technical issues surrounding IDN developments, in order to support ICANN's IDN work and facilitate the acheivement of program milestones.
  • Assist the IDN Program Director as required with all related activities.

You will be a consensus builder, able to influence resolution on issues in an environment with conflicting stakeholder views by creatively addressing problems and challenges where conflicting views challenge outcomes. You must also have outstanding verbal and written communications skills and be fluent in English, and preferably, at least one other language.

Experience in the IT and E-Commerce arena, and ability to identify relevant issues that may be of relevance to ICANN's mission and responsibility is also a key requirement.

Candidates should be graduates with background knowledge in Internationalized Domain Names, including a related technical qualification, and demonstrated experience in this specialized area. In-house Counsel - Contract Law

The Internet Corporation For Assigned names and Numbers (ICANN) has an immediate opening for an in-house Counsel that specialises in Contract Law. Two positions are available. Reporting to ICANN.s In-house Counsel based in Los Angeles, the successful candidates will be responsible for the negotiation of contracts on behalf of ICANN, whilst protecting the legal rights, obligations and privileges that embody ICANN in its field of operation.

Whilst working as part of an International team focused within the Internet Community, you will be required to work with minimal supervision and with a high dependence on your own initiative, driving successful outcomes as part of a culturally diverse and dispersed group of stakeholders and team members. It will best suit someone who is able to travel Internationally at short notice, and has worked in a flexible and dynamic International organisation. This role requires a hands-on approach with the incumbent comfortable moving between high-level strategy and detailed contract negotiations.

You will be able to demonstrate a successful track record in International contract negotiations. Your ability to liaise with important stakeholders with diplomacy is paramount, whilst exhibiting sound negotiation and organisational skills. Other primary responsibilities of the position include the construction and management of the Company.s legal compliance program within the region as well as the management of external counsel where required. Creation and maintenance of risk management strategies is also a key component of the role.

This role will be best suited to individuals who are highly attuned to negotiations in a commercial environment, and apply keen judgement in securing the best possible outcome. They will have a planned and organized approach that sees them complete projects and tasks on time and to a high level of quality. An adaptability and flexibility that deliver high standards of work in a highly energised environment is a must.

The successful incumbent will have between five to ten years related commercial contract law experience with a supplementary background in Economics, Commerce, Business, Computer Science and/or technology. They will have a strong understanding of local and international Internet process and the legal issues involving the Internet. They will be experienced in intellectual property law and have managed the construction of contracts in both English and other European languages (position one) or English and other Asian languages (position two). The successful candidate will have expertise in International policy development and communications, both in the Internet and global arenas. A minimum of 10 years of experience with Internet issues in civil society, media, industry, government or other relevant sectors is required, with at least 5 years of management experience, and education to the post graduate level. Project Coordinator: Internationalized Domain Names (IDN)

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is the not for profit organization established to coordinate the technical elements of the domain name system (DNS) to ensure universal resolvability, so that all users of the Internet can find all valid addresses world-wide.

The reliable deployment of Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) is one of the key issues facing the global Internet community. An example of an IDN is the replacement of Latin character with other scripts in Internet domain names. We have an immediate job opening for the position of Project Coordinator to support this work at ICANN. Reporting to the IDN Program Director, the primary responsibilities of the position are as follows:

  • Provide project management and general administrative support to the IDN Program Director, to ensure on-time achievement of project milestones.
  • Research, develop and provide reports and other data analysis as may be required from time to time by the IDN Project Manager.
  • Develop integrated program schedules and assist in keeping projects on schedule.
  • Create, develop and implement any needed project management databases for program monitoring and scheduling.
  • Coordinate with management, members of the ICANN Board and the ICANN community as appropriate to facilitate timely completion of IDN milestones and management status reports.
  • Attend relevant meetings, provide minutes, and assign action items.
  • Support the IDN Program Director in preparing position papers and updates to ICANN Executive Team and Board members.

Candidates should possess a Bachelors degree in business, international business and/or an appropriate technical qualification, and demonstrated interest and knowledge in IDN subject matter. A broad understanding of technical issues involving the Internet is required as is international experience.

This position would suit a new or recent graduate with an interest in developing a career in this and/or related fields, and who can demonstrate the requisite administrative skills.

These positions report to the General Manager of Global Partnerships and will join a new and growing network of similarly skilled individuals.

You will work with other members of the Global Partnerships team to act on behalf of the organization with regional stakeholders, forums, initiatives and needs as they relate to ICANN's responsibilities. This includes the analysis and creation of reports on regional and local developments relevant to ICANN's business plan. The incumbents will also provide input to ICANN's global strategy and prepare associated position papers relevant to this.

The successful applicants will be committed to a disciplined communications system that systematically and regularly updates ICANN on issues relevant to the region as they relate to ICANN's respective responsibilities. The preferred individuals will be outstanding negotiators, able to influence resolution on issues in an environment with conflicting stakeholder views. They must also have outstanding verbal and written communications skills and be fluent in English and at least one other local language of the Region. They will be extremely motivated with strong leadership qualities. They will also be highly organized, politically aware and astute in the area of diplomacy. An ability to work with minimal supervision under pressure and to deadlines is essential. The successful individuals will possess an advanced degree in international relations, international business and/or an appropriate technical qualification, and demonstrated experience in the international arena (private and or public sector). Technical Writer

The ideal candidate will be a graduate with a bachelors degree in communications, business and communications, or a related subject, or the equivalent related business experience. At least 4 years experience in the field of technical writing, preferably for High Tech organizations is required.

The individual must be a self-starter with the ability to be productive with minimum oversight. Knowledge of media production, communication and dissemination techniques, written and oral would be an advantage. Expert use of associated media production software is required.
