Overview

This session is an opportunity for the ICANN community to discuss current developments on Internet governance, including enhanced cooperation. The session will cover several areas relating to Internet governance.

The Commission on Science and Technology for Developments (CSTD) Working Group on IGF improvements had concluded its work, and a report was issued and discussed at the CSTD 15th session in Geneva in May. The CSTD also convened a consultation on  Enhanced Cooperation. Discussions on the next steps including mapping current initiatives and opportunities relating to Enhanced Cooperation will contribute to important ongoing discussions. Invited participants in this session will share their views on the importance of these developments, and will apprise the community of the state of preparations of key upcoming events this year:

  1. The 7th meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) will take place this year in Baku, Azerbaijan.
  2. In late 2012, the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) will host two world conferences, the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA), and the World Conference on

International Telecommunications (WCIT). Both conferences are addressing issues relevant to the global Internet and its Governance discourse, and their outcomes may have an impact on various parts of the Internet space.

Agenda Details:

Discussion in this session will focus on:

  • Preparations for the 2012 IGF, including the CSTD report on improvements to the IGF and Enhanced Cooperation and next steps;
  • A factual overview of the issues and forums where Internet governance will be considered for 2012, 2013 and 2014;
