Overview

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a critical part of the Internet. ICANN has a limited role with respect to security and stability of the DNS, yet the organization has an overarching requirement to provide a technical coordination function to preserve the security and stability of the DNS.

The DNS Risk Management Framework WG (DNRMF WG) is a Board initiated WG which is charged to develop goals and milestones towards the implementation of a DNS security risk management framework for Internet naming and address allocation services, accompanied by defined timelines and budgetary implications. Further, the DNRMF WG is tasked with oversight of the creation of an initial assessment that will serve as a baseline.

In San José, a first public workshop was held to hear community views on its work. Intersessionally, the WG has continued to refine the scope of its work, and now has agreed to a staff assessment of the requirements to develop a the needed risk management framework. That assessment is available below. It includes a revised timeline to finalize the WG's achievements.

The purpose of this second Workshop is to seek input from all interested parties, to provide advice to the DNRMF WG on the assessment and the related request for proposals for the study to be done. Specifically, the WG would like to hear community views on the list of tasks for the DNS Risk Management Framework; including (a) revised definition of the DNS proposed to clarify the scope of the study, (b) inventory of risks, (c) impact analysis, (d) analysis of severity of impact for each, and (e) identification of mitigation measures.

Who Should Attend? | People concerned with the security and stability of the DNS, ccTLDs, gTLDs, governments and other experts including participants in the DSSA.
