What it is | ICANN has undertaken a policy process which is designed to introduce a number of new Generic Top-Level Domains. This Workshop will focus discussion on how this may impact registrants and what should be considered to protect registrants as this evolution in the marketplace occurs.

Why it's important | The evolving domain name industry has introduced many new players and new business models on both the registrar and registry level. With this anticipated expansion in the number of gTLDs the rate of change and the significance of their impacts will increase. ICANN (including its supporting organisations, constituency groups and community) has a strong interest in protecting registrants and clearly describing the domain namespace for registrants. This participatory workshop will provide background and will solicit public discussion to identify actions that might be taken as part of the new gTLD introduction.

Who should attend? | Registrants, gTLD registrars and registries, parties who may apply for new gTLDs, and users of the Internet at-large.

What it is | IP address utilisation is affected by policy decisions. As we near the depletion of previously unallocated IPv4 addresses, it becomes more urgent to understand how policies implemented at the local, national, regional, and global levels will encourage or discourage the deployment of IPv6.

This workshop will be led by Doug Brent, Chief Operating Officer and is intended to provide some background for how the Internet has arrived at this point, and to give some sense of how different participants in IP addressing policy can affect the Internet's future direction.

Why it's important | This session will be vital for business participants as it will not only provide an outline of ICANN's experience so far with IPv6 rollout; it will also provide an opportunity to discuss firsthand what it means for Business.

What is it | Briefing and feedback on the Joint Project Agreement (JPA) mid-term review process and outcome as well as an update of the work of the President's Strategy Committee in considering feedback from the community about transition and the multi-stakeholder model.

Why it's Important | Signed in 2006, the JPA is an agreement between the U.S. Department of Commerce and ICANN. ICANN believes that it is meeting it's responsibilities under the agreement and that the JPA should be concluded nine years after the President of the United States instruction that the Domain Name System be transitioned to the private sector model of stakeholder consultation that ICANN represents. This is an opportunity for the community to provide input to the President's Strategy Committee which is conducting a consultation on the ICANN model in the lead up to the conclusion of the JPA in September 2009.

Who Should Attend | All those interested in a Domain Name System that is coordinated; not controlled.

What it is | The first workshop provides the opportunity to learn more about the Review of ALAC that has been completed by Westlake Consulting. In particular, it will provide the chance to ask questions of the reviewers in order to gain a better understanding of the reasoning behind the report’s recommendations.

A copy of the report can be downloaded from the ICANN site [pdf]. And a summary is posted here [pdf].

Why it is important | The workshop will allow the community to meet the members of the Board Governance Committee Working Group who will be responsible for listening to the community feedback to the recommendations in the review and presenting an action plan to the Board.

Who should attend? | The workshop is open to everyone and all those who have an interest in the future of ALAC should attend.

Approach | The discussion will be structured to allow opportunities for those who are participating remotely to take part in the discussion. Please make (brief and succinct) comments or ask questions through this public participation site.

In an attempt to cover as many comments and questions as possible, members of the audience on the day are also encouraged to submit written responses through the public participation site.

It would be useful if those attending the workshop read at least the executive summary of the report beforehand.

“Office Hours” events

In addition to these workshops, there will be two "Office Hour" events. These are two 90 minute sessions where members of the community can talk to the working group members about the ALAC review and its recommendations.

The times are:

  • Wednesday 9-11, Hemingway Room
  • Thursday 10-12, Corner of the foyer farthest from meeting rooms

Our intention is to provide a less formal setting in which people can engage in deeper and longer conversations than are possible at workshops or at the regular working group meetings.

Summaries of the main points raised will be published on the ALAC public comment site.
