2022 marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of the application window for new gTLDs. ICANN73 provides an excellent opportunity to reflect on some of the benefits that new gTLDs have brought, innovative business models and practices that new gTLDs have successfully adopted, as well as explore some of the challenges encountered by new gTLD applicants and operators.
Jeff Sass (Moderator)
Jeff Sass was Co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer of .CLUB Domains, now part of GoDaddy Registry. Currently, Jeff is CMO of Paw.com and he is the author of "Everything I Know about Business and Marketing, I Learned from THE TOXIC AVENGER." During his tenure with .CLUB Jeff served for a number of years as a board member of the Domain Name Association (TheDNA.org).
Adrian Kinderis
Co-founder of Bombora Technologies group of companies (formerly AusRegistry Group) in 1999, Adrian grew the business from a small Melbourne start-up to a thriving global organisation. Under his leadership as Chief Executive Officer, the Group created a strong reputation as the specialists in the development of high-volume, complex, transaction-based Internet systems. An end result of this success was the acquisition of Bombora Technologies in July 2015 by US technology company Neustar. As a veteran of the Internet community, Adrian is an in-demand advocate for ICANN’s revolutionary new Top-Level Domain Program.
Lorna Gradden
Lorna Gradden has been working in domain name management since 1994, going on to co-found Com Laude with Nick Wood in 2004. In the 2012 new gTLD round, she oversaw more than 120 successful applications from Com Laude clients.
Ray King
Ray has been an innovator and entrepreneur since he started his first venture in high school. His companies include Semaphore, Inc., SnapNames, Inc., AboutUs, Inc., Top Level Design, LLC and Porkbun, LLC. He also directs, non-profit ICANNWiki.
Stacey King
Stacey King is a Visiting Policy Fellow with the Oxford Internet Institute. Her research is focused on the interplay between national and international regulatory structures and policies and the emerging development and use of artificial intelligence. Stacey works for a US-based tech company, previously served as Sr. Digital and IP Counsel in London for a European luxury goods company, and worked at several U.S. law firms with a focus on intellectual property, emerging technologies, and multi-stakeholder governance. Stacey has been involved with ICANN since 2001, served on the IRT, was an officer for the IPC, co-founder of the Brand Registry Group, and on the Board of the DNA. She was responsible for TLD applications for several companies, and ran Amazon’s registry business for 8 years. Stacey is participating on the panel in her personal capacity and is not representing the views of any employers past or present.
Matt Serlin
With a focus on security, service and support, Matt Serlin joined GoDaddy Corporate Domains in 2017 to lead all domain operations, including client services and domain name operations. Matt has 20 years of direct domain name experience and has been a pioneer in the domain industry implementing the first instance of registry locking with Verisign, deploying two-factor authentication as a requirement for domain administrators, and acting as an outspoken advocate for brand owner rights including actively participating in the 2012 round of new gTLDs.
