BACKGROUND
Background information, personal statement, URL, or other information you would like posted in connection with your name on the ICANN website.
The internet is a medium similar to newspapers. There is an important difference. Everybody with internet access can be a publisher. Even more importantly everybody can reach almost everybody through the world wide web or through news groups. In a way the internet community is like a small village, where word of mouth gives the power of information and knowledge to the community members.

This makes the internet the most democratic medium since human existence. It puts power in the hands of many.

Therefor non-democratic leaders around the world are trying to limit access to the internet. And established distributores of information are trying to gain control on the internet.

The present development in media industry leads to few global entities controlling the majority publications. Just think of News Corp., AOL Time Warner and Bertelsmann. All of them are also trying to gain control over content and distribution on the internet. And all of them are lobbying around or within ICANN.

As a director of ICANN I want to make sure that the democratic character of the internet is preserved.

That means:

1.
Internet access has to be available to as many people as possible at affordable prices.

2.
All technical changes and developments have to support this goal.
