I believe ICANN needs to take a balanced leadership position on the various issues affecting the Internet and its use.
As people and business need to live and work in an Internet environment conducive to all, B2C and B2B policies must reflect this fact. Peer-to-Peer internet relationships must allow the people the free exchange of ideas and goods without depriving those who produced the goods of their rights.
Freedom of Speech must be guaranteed on the Internet but should not extend unrestricted to the website names chosen; this is an Internet infrastructure issue much like the naming of streets in our cities and towns. Freedom of Speech also should not extend to speech which is usually considered illegal in real-world situations. The Internet must be free but not lawless; our social norms should still apply.
Privacy and Security must not be compromised but should be weighed against our need for Openness and Community on the Internet. Here Technology, Law, and Ethics play important roles.
ICANN policies should assist the integration of e-Life and Real Life including the establishment of new TLDs. This being a social issue with a technological implementation and associated technological problems and restrictions.
