In the past months, there has been a strong move made from the
industries to expand the commercial use of Internet. However, Internet
should not been seen as a medium for the commercial industries to sell
goods and information. Internet should be seen as a place for non-profit
groups and civil society to take active role in increasing the free flow
of information to create and nuture social diversity and human
interaction.
There are strong concerns raised from the civil society that ICANN at
the summit of policy making on Internet Governance issues may only
appreciate views and demands expressed by the industries. In which
case, the opportunity for for people at large to participate in such
important decision making will be deprived.
Especially in case of minorities, there is a cold fact that most of them,
expecially users from developing countries and women, has not been able
to take part in Internet policy making - despite the fact that many of the
"minorities" could not escape interaction with Internet.
We must avoid Internet policy making that connects global society making
decisions taking account only of the industrial community. It may appear
profitable to the industiry in a short term, but there are risks that it
will interfere with healthy development of Internet and make it unusable
medium for the many.
I believe it is profitable for ICANN to have also the civil society
committed to overall policy making for the Internet. I wish to provide
such viewpoints for ICANN in the event that i suceed in the election.
