PROFESSIONAL |
Employer(s) |
I am employed by the Society for College and University Planning (SCUP), a nonprofit, 501(C)(3) organization with a mission to "promote the advancement and application of effective planning in higher education." I wear a number of hats with SCUP, including those of CIO for our 28-node LAN and Internet capacity, as well as writing, researching, editing, and publishing (Internet and some print) about higher education issues, including IT. |
QUALIFICATIONS |
Statement addressing the candidates qualifications
and experience specifically relevant to
(a) ICANN's technical and
administrative responsibilities, and
(b) your leadership and policy-level
roles.
|
My mission is to ensure inclusiveness, as opposed to the appearance of inclusiveness. It has been said that ICANN coordinates, but that technical coordination of unique values sometimes requires accounting for non-technical policy interests. I am not beholden to any interest group. My interest is in enhancing the openness and inclusiveness of ICANN processes, thus enhancing the quality of its policies. I am open to interactive communications from anyone with an interest in ICANN's activities.
Academically, I hold both a masters degree and a law degree. Rather than thinking of myself as a manager, I think of myself as a "facilitator" who helps information to flow and things to happen. In recent years I have worked with the Corporation for Research and Educational Networking (CREN) to develop and operate its useful "Tech Talk with the Experts" Webcast series.
My leadership experiences outside of direct employment are diverse and useful: involvement with too many groups to list: HWG, WAOE, board member of an active athletic club, and a founding member and currently a lifetime Fellow of the Association of Internet Professionals (AIP). I helped organize perhaps the most open and democratic of the various White Paper meetings as a member of the Steering Committee for the meeting in Washington, DC, in 1998.

BACKGROUND |
Background information, personal statement, URL, or other information
you would like posted in connection with your name on the ICANN
website.

My background is quite varied. I was born in West Virginia and raised in eastern Ohio. I've been living in Michigan for more than 25 years now. I served 4.5 years in the US Navy, which included three Vietnam duty tours. Most of my employment and work experience has been in the area of association management/nonprofit organizations, focusing on management and communications.
In earlier stages of my life, before it became clearer to me how I could best make a living and enjoy life simultaneously, I was a biological anthropologist (taught at a number of institutions) and then a research attorney (worked mostly in plaintiff's medical malpractice and drug product litigation). I also spent 8.5 years working from home doing desktop publishing/freelance writing or at positions which allowed my small children to attend work with me. (They are now 16, 15, and 12.)
At all times and in all environments I have been passionately interested in groups of people with with shared passions and interests working together voluntarily and as democratically as possible - and with the communications work and information flow needed to make that happen.
I live a full life, intensely occupied with my work and my family, but also reading extensively and am most recently proud to have competed in the World Disc Golf Championships and earned first place in the Advanced Grand Master (amateur guys older than 50) division! Think of me as the "whole person" candidate!
