Personal
Statement
The deep
involvement of Africa, as the newest of the emerging Internet
communities, is critical for the success of the ICANN process
in order to avoid further digital divide. I am committed to
working for its development and will ensure Africa's participation
by building in-region grassroots institutions that mobilize
Africans to participate in ICANN.
We need
to find safeguards for several unknowns of ICANN and developing
countries, being young Internet communities will likely receive
significant impact from decisions on sensitive issues such
as domain names, addressing and how to engage Internet users.
We will work closely with other developing country communities
to develop meaningful agenda and add value to ICANN. A genuine
outreach to developing countries will enhance ICANN as a global
organization for a global resource. We should work on integrating
ICANN into the community of International Organizations.
We would
seek support for the needs of the underprivileged of the Internet
and favor formulating an agile balance of private, civil and
public interests. The asset of consensus building in current
practice needs to be reinforced by a method of making progress
while knotty issues are worked separately to guarantee progress
in ICANN's establishment.
