Sureswaran Ramadass

I am from Malaysia, and was born in the city of Georgetown, Penang, Malaysia.
I am currently employed by University Science Malaysia, which is a government funded university.

The following below is a brief summary of my resume, which I hope will reflect my experience in leadership abilities and policy level roles. I hope such experiences will enable me to address ICANN related matters in a more productive manner.

My stand in ICANN is simple. Issues should benefit the world as a whole and not the wealthy few.


Education


DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN COMPUTER SCIENCE. University Sains Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia. Date of Graduation: June 2000.

MASTERS OF SCIENCE IN ELECTRICAL/COMPUTER ENGINEERING. University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida. Date of Graduation: May 1990.

HONORS BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN ELECTRICAL/COMPUTER ENGINEERING. (Magna Cum Laude) University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida. Double major: COMPUTER SCIENCE.

Activities

Head and Voting Member of TEMAN-USM, a member of the Non-Commercial Domain Name Holders Constituency (NCDNHC) under ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers). 1999-present

Head of APAN Malaysia (Asia Pacific Advanced Networks). APAN is a high bandwidth ATM network that interconnects the Asia Pacific Countries. APAN Malaysia has 7 active Working Groups involved in APAN. This includes an active IPV6, Multimedia, Agriculture, Satellite, Earth Monitoring & Measurement Working Groups. 1997-present

Chairman, Multimedia WG for APAN. The Multimedia WG has already started on numerous ambitious projects, including the incorporation of a multipoint multimedia conferencing system that will support the APAN network, a Virtual Bio-informatic Multimedia Database and a Multimedia Video Streaming System. 1998-present

Head of the AI3 Malaysia (Asian Internet Interconnections Initiative). This project is part of the Japanese WIDE project and involves the setting up and commissioning of an earth station for communications and Internet experiments with the other AI3 partners. Currently, Thailand, Indonesia and Hong Kong are connected on the KU-Band and Malaysia and Singapore will be connected on the C-Band. Future members include China, Cambodia, Philippines and Laos. 1997-present

Head of the TEMAN Project for USM. Member of the TEMAN Steering Committee. TEMAN is an ATM Multimedia test-bed network that will link most of the Universities and Telecommunication Research facilities throughout the country. 1997-present

Head of the Network Research Group (NRG). NRG is an internationally known research group which concentrates in the following 4 areas: Multimedia Networks Distributed Systems and Network Entities Network Monitoring Network Simulation NRG consists of about 50 researchers working in the above areas. 1994-present

IT (Information Technology) Committee
This top level university committee decides on the IT implementation needs for the entire university.

IT (Information Technology) Infrastructure Committee
This second level university committee decides on the IT infrastructure needs for the entire university.

IT (Information Technology) Innovation Committee
This second level university committee formulates and decides on the IT innovations as well as the IT consultancy needs for the entire university.

Acculturation of R&D Committee
An Advisory committee which consists of selected researchers in the university to discuss the promotion of R&D within the university.

My current responsibilities with the University

Senior Lecturer: In the field of Systems. This includes teaching courses in :

  • Data Communications and Computer Networks.
  • Microprocessors and Interfacing
  • Digital Logic and Design.


Administration

Program Chairman for Systems (Feb 1995 till present).
This included managing administration, research and other activities for the systems staff and groups which consists of the Parallel, Networks and Intelligent Systems Research.

Head of Labs (Nov. 92 till present).
This includes management and administration of 5 technicians and 2 lab assistants. The lab itself contains 8 labs and an inventory of over 300 heterogeneous machines.


Research

Head of the Network Research Group (Jan 93 till present).
The group currently has about 50 researchers, inclusive of project students, research officers, collaborative programs with industry and industrial trainees. Details of the research activities can be obtained on-line from my web server: http://network2.cs.usm.my. Projects include development and implementation of Multimedia Conferencing Systems, Distributed Systems, Network Peripherals, Network Monitoring and Management, and Distributed Databases.


Invited Scientist Positions

Invited Professor, LIB (Labrotaire Informatique de Besancon, France): Funded by Universite French Comte, Besancon, France. Nov 96-Jan 97 and again in Oct 99-Dec 99

Patents

Software Patent Pending:
MULTIPOINT-TO-MULTIPOINT MULTIMEDIA CONFERENCING SYSTEM INCORPORATING A DISTRIBUTED ENTITY ENVIRONMENT AND A UNIQUE METHOD OF FLOOR CONTROL. There are plans to derive another seven patents from the above general patent.

Owner of an SNMP IANA registered number.

In General

Dr. Ramadass is also a Senior R&D Consultant for the following companies:

  • Cabletron Systems Sdn. Bhd.
  • Multimedia Research Lab (Mlabs) Sdn. Bhd.
  • CompQuest Sdn. Bhd.

He is held on a retainer for these corporations and advises and consults for them on Multimedia and Computer Networks and Information Technology.

Dr. Ramadass is also a R&D partner and performs close research collaborations with the following companies:

  • Computer Associates Inc.
  • MIMOS Berhad
  • Telekoms Malaysia Berhad
  • NCR Corporation (tentatively)

The collaboration with these companies is to jointly develop new and innovative ideas and products.

Dr. Ramadass has published over 40 National and International level research papers, and written chapters and provided materials for 2 books. He has given 3 keynote addresses and has chaired numerous conferences/workshops. He has been a member of the programme committee for 5 international and 3 national conference. He has also reviewed numerous papers for numerous different conferences.

Dr. Ramadass has received over RM 7 million in research funding and grants from numerous organizations in the 7 ¸ years that he has been with the university.
