election

Question:
I think that if the realist theory that humans possess the longing for power by nature is right, ICANN's election could become just another means of satisfying one's desire for power. Do all candidates agree with me.

I see it in a different way. In my view, the ICANN board should reflect the interests of all users of the Internet and my only interest is to work for a better environment for the Internet. We need to be a part of and even lead the discussions so that the Internet is truly a global opportunity for all. That is why I think it very important to have more participation from our region. That is why I encourage you and others to be involved in ICANN activities.

I have my respect to your assumption based on the realist theory as you stated. Where there is an organisation, esp. one with a hierarchical structure, there is often an unbalance of power. But, I believe this ICANN election is a chance more for the power of At-large members than for the candidates, when our members show their awareness to vote and to select the most suitable one as their representative in the ICANN Director Board.
The result of this election will be determined by the individual votes. It is in principle a democratic bottom-up process. Of course, it depends on the awareness and preference of the members. I believe it is the best way to avoid the phenomenon you speculate. That is also why I speak for the member awareness in my answers to other questions and in the Web pages I prepared for this ICANN election, etc.
I have also stated in my nominee page for this ICANN election, ˇ§I will do my best to reflect and fulfill the requirements of AAP Internet citizens in joint decision making within the ICANN Board, but will not pursue a narrow-minded governance of the Internet affairs.ˇ¨ As a supplement, I suggest the members to monitor my behavior and discuss ICANN-related issues with me, if elected.
I am not a long-hair young fellow from Taiwan. But, after so many years, I think I can still pick up the memory on John and his song ˇ§Power to the peopleˇ¨. I hope you could agree and support my position.
