One commercial company having a monopoly is not beneficial for the users in the long run. Standards should be developed by neutral bodies (IETF-like) and implemented by vendors letting the users choose between products implementing the same open standard. A good example is the LINUX model where you can choose between various packages. Closed document formats is a bad thing, but I must admit, I am using them dayly...
