Topic:
Giving a voice to all countries
Date: 2000-09-24 03:25:40
Author: Vittorio Bertola <vb@vitaminic.net>
Question:
In most Regions, At Large membership is dominated by one single country. There have already been complaints from such different countries as Japan, France, Italy, Australia, Argentina, Canada, Russia, UK and more. If elected, how would you address this issue, and how soon?

Are you sure that this is really the job of the At Large Director? As a candidate I respond to all inquiries by individual users and the press. In fact, I've spent most of my time answering questions for about 6 weeks now. Alas, most of them are of German origin. If you have any suggestions as to how I could attract attention for ICANN and the elections in Italy, please let me know.
More to the point, the single countries and the candidates thereof can't be held responsible for the lack of interest in other countries. I am definitely willing to help, however it's the job of each national community to look to a better representation among the At Large Membership.

If one country in a region (ex. Europe) dominates the ICANN At Large membership, it is because the other countries have not done their homework about ICANN awareness. Perhaps ICANN is not regarded in these countries to be important enough. If one country is dominating, this will challenge the other ones to be more active. This is free competition.
