Topic:
Why is www.tv allowed to over-charge for the acquisition of domain names?
Date: 2000-10-04 16:02:51
Author: Jose Ferreiras <josefepaula@hotmail.com>
Question:
One was able to register .tv names for as low as $50. I actually passes on the opportunity and if I now decided to by the same name that was available at $50 it would now cost me 1,500 a year.
Is this going to change?

If the TLD space increases, so there are
more television-chartered TLDs, the price
should decline.

The solution is the creation of a great many new TLDs. This will eliminate the false scarcity problem, which is being reflected in the inflated prices that you are seeing.

Yes. The .tv registrar can charge a high fee today because (a) there's no competition among registrars for Tuvalu's ccTLD, and (b) until the TLD space is expanded, .tv enjoys a monopoly on the television connotation of the TLD name (a similar situation exists with Moldova's domain .md, and may soon exist with Colombia's domain .co). This will change.

If more Top Level Domains are allowed, and I argue that they should be, then competition will drive these prices down.
