Auctioning Off Cyberland
Date: 2000-10-05 07:28:38
Author: Thomas Lowenhaupt <toml@communisphere.com>
Question:
With the ICANN's home page officially declaring cyberland speculation rampant, and with growing concern about potential inequalities and a digital-divide, would you support the ICANN's auctioning off the entire domain name space, with the revenue dedicated to lifelong education?

I support auctioning off TLDs and using the proceeds to fund legitimate ICANN activities -- including educational programs about ICANN and the at large membership.

As long as the name space were
expanded as quickly as I think it could, I
have no problem with auctioning. But I do
have a problem with ICANN taking on
some political purpose like funding
education. I'm all for education (after all,
I'm a teacher); but I'm against ICANN
assuming the role of a policy maker, by
picking and choosing among policies to
fund.
