Date: 2000-10-05 16:37:51
Author: Sandro Veronese <kensan@libero.it>

Question: Will be there a TLD for my personal home page? Registry.it and Dada have proposed a new TLD : pid (Personal IDentification), name is not important but the idea is good. What do you think? Excuse for my poor english.

A domain name is used for a lot of things. Not only WEB-pages. A special domain name for WEB pages only is not a good idea because a domain name is really just an address, easier to remember than an IP-address. But a domain name are very often also used as an element in a label pointing to a WEB-page. Having a gTLD for individuals could be a very good idea. The policy and the structure for the sub-domains must be worked out, but in general I support the idea because it have the same flavour as the existing ones (com, net, org). If such a TLD is introduced, you will be able to use this TLD also for your personal home page.

I understand, from reading the list of applications received by ICANN, that a few of them are addressing the case of home page (and mail addresses) for individuals. I think it is a very good initiative: it should not create too many TM conflicts and these domains will probably be cheap, whereas in general domains are still quite expensives for individual use. Moreover there may be many other innovative applications for personal domain names.
