Topic: Opening Member to Member Communication Channel
Date: 2000-10-07 21:42:38
Author: Thomas Lowenhaupt <toml@communisphere.com>

Question: While still a candidate, you have the opportunity to communicate with your fellow ICANN members. Win or loose, that channel might close after October 10. Since member to member communication is not allowed on the ICANN website, can you suggest a public space where we might meet thereafter?

I have no doubt that soon there will be several websites set up for such communication. In fact, at-large related election sites are up already. There have also been discussions among some at large members about *formalizing* the channels of communication of the at large membership, perhaps at the November ICANN meetings.

The at-large membership clearly needs a forum in which to meet, and some structure that allows the ideas that surface in that forum to percolate up to the single representative we'll have on the ICANN board. I'd like to see both regional forums and a general at-large forum, and some structure to the at-large constituency - perhaps an at-large assembly and council. It's telling that so far no at-large meeting is planned for LA in November.

If I am elected to the Board, I shall push to have such a public space created by ICANN. I shall also establish communication facilities so that at large members will be able to discuss issues with each other and with me.

If I am not elected to the Board, I intend to work with the at large members and the other progressive candidates, one of whom - hopefully - will be on the board, to push for increased democratization of ICANN. This includes the creation of communication channels for at large members provided by ICANN.
