Topic: Voices of the At Large Members
Date: 2000-10-10 09:20:24
Author: Shireen Mitchell

Question: Dr. Tiller speaks of making sure that all the voices of the members are heard, particularly those that are in smaller numbers. What would you do to increase these numbers and get a better representation of the whole Internet community?

Not many people know that ICANN exists; not many of those who know it exists have a clear idea about what it can and can't do, or how they might become involved. One of my highest priorities as a director would be outreach - explaining ICANN, what it does (and what it doesn't do), and how people can participate to as much of the global Internet community as possible. It will also be important to create a forum and other information-sharing structures for the at-large membership so that people's voices can be heard.

During my campaign, I set up a public information site (www.icannvote.com) to help inform the general public about ICANN and how to register as a voting member. I sent out emails, faxes, letters, and made phone calls to seniors groups, womens groups, and minority organizations encouraging them to participate. Many responded but could not get on to ICANN servers in the final days to register. I do not think that ICANN should target any particular minority group, but I think it needs to have public information and procedures sufficient enough to allow any member of society to have a chance to be informed and to participate.
