General reflections on S

ICANN is, as ever, at a bit of a crossroads. The new MoU is signed, the first IGF only recently concluded, and while some hurdles have been overcome, others remain.

What do people think will be the main discussions (and arguments) in S

.biz/info/org contracts will be the main topic

The main discussion will be whether or not to approve the proposed .biz/info/org contracts. The only good will occur if the Board soundly rejects those proposals. Otherwise, the Board will further see its legitimacy eroded.

Or the dotcom contract perhaps

The USG has given itself the right to decide who runs the dotcom registry in 2012.

So even if ICANN is made autonomous in 2009, the US government will still have control of a main piece of the jigsaw.

Perhaps this was always going to be the way - and the price for getting the USG out of the driving seat - but it also means more years of arguments and undue influence.
