Remote participation in ALAC meetings

This is the first time I've had to participate via remote tools to the ICANN meeting.
The webcast hasn't been great - audio hasn't been good, but at least I got to see what was going on.
ALAC meetings has excellent remote participation for the 2 members who were absent owing to family illnesses (me and Jean Polly) as well as some memebrs who had to leave early (Erick). We got a webcam view, and skype audio and a phone link were options for participation. A Skype chat posted on the screen in the room allowed us to request speaking time remotely.
It worked so well that I was even able to run for Chair of the Committee remotely. I didn't win (barely), but I think that the discussion was very helpful to the future functioning of the ALAC, and I congratulate Annette Muelhberg, the returning Chair of ALAC. Also our other positions - congrats to all the volunteers.

A riddle

Of all the delicious chocolate in the world, why does the Hotel Transamerica stock their mini bars with Hershey's?

We call it football

Last night, we had the now semi-regular football tournament. Like many things at ICANN meetings, some themes emerge; and a little repetition. (Whois, anyone?) Huge thanks to Erick Iriarte for putting it all together.

As is traditional, the ICANN staff and Board team lost all our matches. We actually do this on purpose, to show humility and openness. It's a ritual humiliation we're happy to go through. And anyway, we had the best t-shirts.

But we weren't completely creamed. We'd lost our professional-level goalie, Olof, because his wife threatened divorce if he came home injured again. But we had Denise harrying the opposing strikers, and tackling dirty the way only girls can in a mixed game.

Some themes emerged;

Missing the meeting

Hi everyone
I can't be there this time for the first time since I was appointed to ALAC by NomCom last year - my dad was badly injured in a car accident and is in intensive care.
I really wanted to come, as it's the LAC region meeting and also the formation of the LACRALO that I've spent so much time on in the past year. But I have been participating remotely, with the webcasts, and the ALAC has me able to attend meetings via Skype.
It's also way cool that this site exists and I can also participate in the informal discussions that surround the meeting (one of the things that we miss a lot in remote participation)
