Dear ICANN Member: Thank you for your questions about ICANN. ICANN, as an international nonprofit organization, coordinating global domain names and IP number system for the Internet, is just beginning its activities. In the age of the Internet and the information revolution, we need a new international arrangement, which can meet the speed and flexibility of changes in technology, the economy and the society. In order to promote the Internet, we need a volunteer private sector driven structure where all stakeholders can equally participate. The benefit of ICANN membership is to allow all those interested in the growth and development of the Internet to be involved in its operations through elected representatives. ICANN has tremendous possibility. Although its mission is limited to technical management of the Internet domain names and IP numbers (and I do not think it is ideal to expand it, at least for a moment), the way it solves and decides issues is a very good and practical model for many other global policy issues. For instance, the online dispute resolution mechanism can be used for other issues such as those relating to privacy protection and consumer contracts. (Again I am not proposing that ICANN should be handling such maters, but just suggesting that such system or idea can be used for many other disputes.). I believe that ICANN can be a 21st century model for an international organization dealing with new technologies and the new economy. (if we grow this properly). Thank you for your question. Please visit my website at www.mkatoh.net for additional information about me and my views on ICANN and other Internet issues. Sincerely, M. Katoh

I would not like to use the word benifit at this moment. I think at first about the awareness. In my opinion, it is a chance for all Internet user try to jointly care about the Internet affiars such as Domain Names, IP and addressing etc. If we don't joint these activities, the process would go back to the time of IANA alone. I think that it is the motive of ICANN to enable members to have a chance to carry out what they like and let the authorities to know what the user want.
