The question would be What are you doing? As you can see in my home page in the official site of the At Large Election or in my personal home page ( http://www.internet.com.uy/raulech ), I'm serving as chair of the LACNIC. LACNIC is a organization in its Setup process. LACNIC will administer the IP numbers fro the Latinamerican and Caribbean region. We are working in the construction of a very open organization. LACNIC will operate taking in count all the particular aspects of our region. I hope you can participate in this process to help us to ensure the success of LACNIC. http://www.lacnic.org

Most countries in the LAC region still apply for addresses directly at ARIN, in North America. For the past several months, the Internet Steering Committee of Brazil has been actively involved in regional negotiations aiming at the establishment of LACNIC, the regional body in charge of IP addresses. These negotiations are open to participation of all countries, several have been actively involved, and it seems pretty viable that we might have it up and running sometime in the first semester of 2001. From then on, it will be up to this (non-governmental) organization to implement the general policies for address distribution in the region, in close articulation with ICANN in general and, more specifically, with ASO.
